Trees touch everything.

We need trees to thrive, and they need us too. A healthy urban tree canopy is critical to ensuring that our community is safe, livable and resilient to climate change - especially as our summers become more intense each year.

Join City of Boulder Forestry, the PLAY Boulder Foundation and Cool Boulder in the commitment to expanding our urban tree canopy and maintaining a healthy, extensive and diverse tree canopy to keep Boulder cool for current and future generations.

Some of the major benefits of a healthy urban tree canopy are:

  • Shielding us from intense heat by shading our sidewalks, bike lanes and neighborhoods;

  • Reducing temperatures by performing evapotranspiration - reducing our need for air conditioning (and the energy and money spent on it);

  • Improving air quality by absorbing pollutants in their leaves;

  • Regulating water flow, reducing stormwater runoff, erosion and pollution in our waterways, and mitigating the risk of flooding;

  • Fighting climate change by capturing and storing carbon;

  • Supporting urban biodiversity by providing forage, shelter and habitat;

  • Improving our physical and mental health, and more!

The City of Boulder Forestry department manages approximately 51,000 public trees in city parks and street rights-of-way. These efforts to maximize the visual, social, economic, health and environmental services this natural resource has to offer for our residents and visitors, have earned the City of Boulder the Tree City USA designation by the National Arbor Day Foundation since 1984!

However, We Need Your help!

The extreme heat being experienced around the world are highlighting the impacts of rapidly advancing climate change - as well as the importance of nature-based climate solutions. One such nature-based solution, our urban tree canopy, has kept Boulder relatively cool so far, but most of those trees are on public lands. Thousands of additional trees need to be planted and cared for on private property - led by community members, to increase our tree canopy’s ability to fight local climate change and extreme heat.
