Volunteer Day: Building Habitat Piles

What: At this project, volunteers will construct wildlife habitat piles—carefully built stacks of branches and woody debris that provide shelter for birds, small mammals, reptiles, and other native wildlife. These piles put material from our sawyer crews to good use while restoring balance to the river corridor ecosystem.

Why is this needed? After the 2013 Front Range flood, the Saint Vrain River shifted course, leaving behind a dry corridor filled with hundreds of large, downed cottonwood trees. This debris has created a hazardous, overgrown landscape that fuels wildfire risk and supports invasive species. By turning this material into habitat piles, we’ll improve safety, accessibility, and ecological health across the area.

Volunteers will work alongside sawyers from the City of Longmont, with opportunities for WRV sawyers to help buck additional materials for pile building.
