Community Volunteer Forestry Project - Forest Thinning and Fuels Reduction

What: Forest Thinning and Fuels Reduction – Restoring Forest Health to Promote Future Resilience

Healthy resilient forests will better adapt to unpredictable changes to environmental conditions. Thinning ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forests by reducing woody fuel accumulation will enhance wildlife habitat, promote long-lived healthy carbon sequestering trees and native understory vegetation. This will also support conditions favorable to withstanding reoccurring restorative wildfires, to which these forests are adapted to and dependent upon. Over the past thirty years, fire season in Front Range forests has become longer and more unpredictable, with a trend toward larger, hotter and more frequent wildfire events. Forest managers implement forest thinning treatments in tandem with prescribed fire to improve forest health and buffer our natural systems against potentially more dramatic shifts in future climate conditions.
