Avoiding the worst outcomes of climate change on forest ecosystems: how are we doing in Colorado?

  • Boulder Rural Fire Rescue Station 6230 Lookout Road Boulder, Colorado, 80301 United States (map)

What: Tom Veblen, PhD, CU Distinguished Professor Emeritus, will discuss the status of forest ecosystems and how we might avoid the worst outcomes of climate change in Colorado.

Avoiding or slowing the worst outcomes of anthropogenic climate change on forest ecosystems requires an evidence-based understanding of how past climate variability and current trends affect disturbance regimes.

For the Colorado Front Range, I synthesize multi-century tree-ring records of fire and insect outbreaks, examining their links to climate variability alongside impacts on tree mortality and regeneration. Finally, I will discuss how these findings inform the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework as a decision-making tool for managing climate impacts.
